Fare at Bill's is simply the best by Audrey Simpson
Sussex Express

I Have been to Bill's on Cliffe High Street in Lewes, on many occasions.

It's a great venue when you want some really tasty comfort food, such as their delicious crumpets with blackberry butter, and an excellent cup of coffee. It is also amazingly good for a host of exotic salads and mouth watering specials. I can honestly say that whatever you choose you can't go wrong.

Just to whet your appetite, how about peppered steak sandwich with West Indian-style mayo with aubergine pickle and honey-roast vegetables (£5.50)? Or chef's special of smoked chicken salad with mango and chilli salsa, cherry tomatoes, spring onions and mange tout (£7.50). Soup of the day Thai spice vegetable and butter bean, served with foccacia bread (£3.25)?

The contented murmurings from my guests included “It's huge”, “It's delicious”, “What a host of scrumptious flavours”.

If that doesn't get you going, let me tell you about the desserts. French apple tart served with rich vanilla ice cream, maple syrup, blackberries and gooseberries. Lemon tart with apricot, blueberries, crème fraiche and red berry compote. White and dark chocolate delice with fig, clementines, crème fraiche, raspberry and chocolate. All at the ridiculously good value of £3.50 a piece!

Four of us consumed a substantial lunch, shared three desserts, drank two café lattes, a cappuccino, a delicious fruit smoothie cocktail – complete with large slice of pineapple garnish – and we only just made it to £40. Service as you will.

We were waited on by a lively, happy team of young people, all sporting red “Bill” T-shirts. It was bliss to see them working in such unison.

Modest Bill said he had a great group of people working for him and what he found is that good staff encourage other good employees. But having a happy and willing work force stems from he top.

It's the same with his customers. He commented upon how grateful he is to have enjoyed such loyal patrons. Bill's would not be consistently busy were it not for the excellent food, good service and value products that are on offer.

Not surprisingly, the place is packed. Half café, half deli. It's like sitting in an amazing emporium of exotic foods – a visual delight of luscious hanging garlic, bunches of red onions, unusual vegetables of brightest colours, herbs in profusion.

Maybe you think I have gone over the top? But as a commentator on restaurants it is a sheer joy to be able to recommend somewhere so wholeheartedly and without reservation.

And the good news is that Bill is looking for an outlet in Brighton .
